The FIP Academy held its second seminar

The FIP Academy held its second seminar
On Thursday, 3rd March, Dieter Weise from the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology (Fraunhofer IWU) introduced his research topic on incremental sheet metal forming.

Dieter Weise, a mechanical engineering graduate at Chemnitz University of Technology, gave a presentation on “Incremental sheet metal forming - strategy for small quantities”. Incremental sheet metal forming (ISF) is a three-dimensional sheet metal forming process that can produce a wide range of products at a relatively low cost.

The major shortcomings in the original process capabilities, such as limited forming angles, extreme thinning and low accuracy have largely been overcome through advanced workpiece analysis techniques and the introduction of intelligent toolpath strategies. While there is still room for improvement in these domains, examples of a wide range of part geometries with sub-millimetre accuracy can now be demonstrated, illustrating the improved mastering of ISF processes,” said Weise, who believes the technology is gradually becoming viable for industrial valorisation. The flexible nature of ISF processes makes them particularly suitable for the manufacturing of small series or even unique sculptured sheet metal parts.

The FIP Academy is one of the activities of the Fraunhofer Innovation Platform for Applied Artificial Intelligence for Materials & Manufacturing at VSB - Technical University of Ostrava. Online seminars are held on the first Thursday of each month via MS Teams.

I am glad that I could give a lecture at the FIP Academy. I believe that these seminars give participants an insight into different areas of research and will hopefully lead to new collaborative projects. My intention was to inform people about ISF, to generate interest in the technology and to encourage collaboration on its further development. I hope I have succeeded in doing so,” added Weise.

The next seminar will take place on 7th April. If you have any questions, please contact Kateřina Angus (katerina.angus@vsb).
