"We are pleased to be included in the ranking, as it reflects our ongoing efforts to enhance our position in the national scientific map. Unlike other rankings, the CWTS Leiden Ranking solely relies on bibliographic data on scientific publications. Instead of creating a one-size-fits-all ranking, the authors provide the flexibility to assess universities' performance using different indicators," explained Jana Kukutschová, the Vice-Rector for Science and Research at VSB-TUO.
The ranking, which is put together by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University in the Netherlands, includes universities that have produced a minimum of 800 publications indexed in Web of Science between 2018 and 2021. They only count so-called core publications, i.e. papers published in international scientific journals.
"The CWTS Leiden Ranking focuses on four areas: scientific impact, international collaboration, open access and gender diversity. It provides data not only for all scientific fields combined but also breaks it down into five main disciplines: Biomedical and Health Sciences, Life and Earth Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Science, Physical Sciences and Engineering, and Social Sciences and Humanities," explained Kateřina Angus, the International Evaluation and Rankings Officer at VSB-TUO.
The CWTS Leiden Ranking 2023 features the following Czech universities (in alphabetical order): Brno University of Technology, Charles University, Masaryk University, Palacký University Olomouc, the Czech Technical University in Prague, the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, the University of Chemical Technology, Prague, the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice, and VSB - Technical University of Ostrava.
