This Year's Scientific Writing Camp Connects Young Scientists from Three Universities

This Year
Not only interdisciplinary but also inter-university collaboration will be the main focus of this year's Scientific Writing Camp (SWC), taking place on 23–24 April. Open to PhD students and postdocs, the event aims to support young researchers in developing their publishing skills. Registration is open until 21 March.

"For the third edition of the camp, we decided to involve the University of Ostrava and the Silesian University in Opava as well. Both their students and mentors will join ours. Since science knows no boundaries, we want young researchers from all participating institutions to connect. A key requirement is that each team must include members from at least two universities," explained Lucie Hofrichterová, administrator of the organising PhD Academy.

The SWC is also open to international students, and, as last year, English will be the working language. Experienced mentors from all three universities will support young scientists in finding common research topics across disciplines, ideally leading to joint publications. A foreign expert will also be present—this year, it will be Sam Illingworth (Edinburgh Napier University, UK), a well-known lecturer teaching in the PhD Academy, internationally recognised in the fields of interdisciplinary studies and science communication.

The results of all teams' work will be evaluated by an expert panel. Members of the top three teams with the best-defined and well-developed research proposals will receive financial rewards, and the winning team will also have their publication fee covered.

Last year, 22 PhD students from all faculties took part in the SWC, with half of them being international doctoral candidates. The winning team consisted of PhD students from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the Faculty of Economics, who worked on designing an e-learning application for financial decision-making education.
