Introducing U!REKA partners: Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences

The reading series about U!REKA partners continues. This time, the editorship of the university magazine Akademik will take you to the last of the main partners, the West of Europe, the Netherlands, where you will find the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS).

As the name suggests, it is a university of applied sciences. This means that it is more focused on practice than theory. While studying at AUAS provides students with academic knowledge, this is closely related to the chosen professional field. This gives students a practical education that is valued by businesses and organisations not only in the Netherlands, but also abroad. The study is focused on gaining practical work experience through internships and projects from university partners.

The university prepares students for a great career

The mission of the university is for more than 40,000 students to use their full potential and to be well prepared for the future. Those interested in studying can choose from a wide range of (international) bachelor or master's degree programmes, exchange programmes or short-term courses. "AUAS will not only prepare you for a great career, but you will also live in Amsterdam, one of the most vibrant multicultural cities in the world," the students say about the study.

AUAS has six faculties:

  • Business and Economics
  • Digital Media and Creative Industries
  • Health, Sports and Physical Activity
  • Applied Social Sciences and Law
  • Education and Pedagigy
  • Technology

Research focused on finding current problems

The university's research is also based on practice. Researchers, teachers, professionals from different disciplines and students work together to develop directly applicable knowledge for practice. As a result, students gain a critical, investigative approach that allows them to maintain their expertise long after graduation.

Through applied research, AUAS contributes to professional innovation in different sectors. Practical research is always looking for solutions to current problems. The university works with a wide range of partners in the city - from businesses to social organisations and other higher education institutions. Together, it develops knowledge around key themes focused on social and economic development in Amsterdam. At AUAS, you will find several centres of expertise that focus on AI, creative innovation, economic transformation or smart cities.

Venice of the North

Amsterdam itself is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. It is made up of colourful houses over narrow canals, boats and houseboats. Walking through the city is a wonderful experience. It is also sometimes called the Venice of the North. Even in Amsterdam you can rent a boat and navigate between historic houses from the 17th century and bridges. The Van Gogh Museum, which is dedicated to this famous painter, is definitely worth a visit.

For many of us, the word Netherlands brings to mind the colour orange and tulips. You can also visit flower markets, great cafes and interesting restaurants with a rich offer of local specialities. In short, Amsterdam offers many experiences and is a combination of history and culture.
