First joint meeting of the FIP Management with its oversight bodies

First joint meeting of the FIP Management with its oversight bodies
The first joint meeting of the Supervisory Group, Advisory Council, and the Management of the Fraunhofer Innovation Platform at VSB – Technical University of Ostrava (FIP-AI@VSB-TUO) on 8 April focused on evaluating the platform's overall performance and recommendations for the future. New Advisory Council members Fernando Pedraza Diaz (La Rochelle University, France) and Francisco Javier Perez Trujillo (Complutense University of Madrid, Spain) were also introduced.

FIP-AI@VSB-TUO, a unique platform in the Czech Republic designed to foster effective connections between research and industry, will celebrate its fifth anniversary this June. The evaluation of its activities over the past six months showed several positive outcomes.

"As discussed during the meeting, FIP-A@VSB-TUO is actively engaged in submitting joint projects. Currently, eleven such projects are underway, including, for example, the NewHeatIntegrated project, which aims to develop innovative solutions for thermal storage applications integrated into buildings across Europe. Another project, Enhance Europe, will provide an energy harvesting system integrated into urban road pavements, utilising both solar and thermal energy. Four more joint projects are awaiting evaluation," said Dieter Weise, Deputy Director of FIP-AI@VSB-TUO from the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology (Fraunhofer IWU).

In addition to updates on selected projects, participants were informed about recent events, such as the Workshop on Thermal Energy Storage and Energetic Materials, with participation of experts from VSB – Technical University of Ostrava (VSB-TUO) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology (Fraunhofer ICT), as well as the upcoming 2nd Czech-German Business Meeting. Platform representatives also took part in the EXPO REAL 2024 in Munich.

From the subsequent discussion, several recommendations emerged, including linking the new study programme in Computational Technologies in Materials Science with FIP-AI@VSB-TUO activities, strengthening AI infrastructure, fostering collaboration with industry during doctoral studies, and further supporting multidisciplinary research.

Fraunhofer Innovation Platforms are established as long-term partnerships between Fraunhofer institutes and universities or non-commercial research organisations worldwide. FIP-AI@VSB-TUO was founded on 1 June 2021, and an evaluation of its five-year performance will take place at the turn of this year and next year.
