Students of European Universities seek Urban Solutions for Postindustrial Ostrava

The Department of Building Materials and Building Diagnostics (FAST) launched the final part of the international project “Blended Intensive Programmes in Higher Education Projects” (Erasmus+ BIP) on Sunday 23.4.2023, which will run until 28.4.2023 and its exact name is “Common Regeneration - How can urban commons transform an industrial and mining region? Case study: Ostrava”.

The programme has already held two virtual meetings in March and April and now the long-awaited practical part, which includes the work of students in international teams, is starting in selected locations in Ostrava itself. The aim of the work of the student teams will be to find architectural solutions for the transformation of the area after mining with an emphasis on mitigating the impacts of climate change and also to find a way to apply such solutions to postindustrial areas anywhere in the world. In this context, the students will also deal with urban communities and the search for socio-cultural and ecological values.

The project is coordinated on the Czech side by VSB-TUO, the Institute of Sustainable Settlement Development z.s. (IURS) and the University of Ostrava, but it is attended by a total of 44 students and lecturers, mainly from foreign universities, some of whom are part of the international consortium U!REKA: Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, Hogeschool van Amsterdam and Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. However, the representation of students is truly global, as Erasmus+ students are also participating in the project, not only from Europe, but also from India, Egypt, South Africa or Mexico! For each participating student, BIP is a great opportunity not only to deepen their knowledge, but also to improve their communication skills.

Erasmus+ BIP "Common Regeneration - How can industrial and urban commons transform an industrial and mining region? Case study: Ostrava" is the first of its kind organized at VŠB-TUO! Due to the abundant participation and also the connection of current topics in connection with the post-industrial landscape, it is possible that this project will start a new era of international projects for students.
