The first meeting of the project team for the Research Platform for Digital Transformation and Society 5.0 took place at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of VŠB-TUO. The project is funded by the Jan Amos Komenský Operational Programme (OP JAK) under the Long-term Cross-sectoral Cooperation Programme for the Ostrava ITI. It focuses on the development of technologies supporting digital transformation and energy optimization.

he project gives us a unique opportunity to connect the academic sphere with industrial partners and bring research results closer to practical application. Society 5.0 is not a distant future, but a reality we must be ready for,” said Petr Šimoník, one of the project’s principal investigators and Vice-Dean for Industrial Collaboration and Commercialization.

The research team will focus on key areas of digitalization, such as the use of artificial intelligence, autonomous and collaborative robotics, operator efficiency in a digitalized environment, modern sensor and communication systems, and the creation of complex value chains.

The project outcomes will be developed to the level of Proof of Concept, i.e. laboratory-verified solutions. The scope also includes process analyses for the circular economy and an evaluation of the sociological impacts of new technologies, directly linked to the concept of Society 5.0.

The project is led by a team comprising Radek Martinek, Petr Šimoník, and Lukáš Danys. The research agenda is further supported by Petr Bilík, Dagmar Juchelková, Jan Platoš, Aleš Vysocký, and Petr Hlubina. In addition to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the project involves the Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Mining and Geology, and Faculty of Materials Science and Technology.

Key industrial partners include ABB, BR Group, Brose, Deloitte, MSIC, TIPA, and V4Group. A number of other companies and institutions are joining as associated partners or as clients expressing interest in the project’s results.

With a budget of nearly CZK 100 million, the project aims to establish a research platform that bridges technical and social sciences, laying the groundwork for the practical application of new technologies.
