Professor Miroslav Příhoda Receives the Georgius Agricola Medal for Lifetime Contribution to Science and Education

This prestigious distinction was presented to Prof. Ing. Miroslav Příhoda, CSc., in recognition of his outstanding lifetime contribution to science, research, and education.

The medal, named after the Renaissance scholar Georgius Agricola, is granted to individuals who have made a significant impact on the development of technical and natural sciences, as well as on the advancement of the university itself. In the case of Professor Příhoda, the award acknowledges more than fifty years of professional dedication closely connected with VSB–TUO.

Prof. Ing. Miroslav Příhoda, CSc. (*1943, Ostrava) is a recognized expert in the field of thermal engineering, energy systems, and metallurgical processes. Throughout his career, he has focused primarily on continuous steel casting, modeling of thermal fields, and the analysis of heat transfer processes in metallurgical and district heating operations. He is the author of numerous scientific papers and monographs that have been widely cited in both academic and professional communities.

His contribution to education is equally significant. At the Department of Thermal Engineering of the Faculty of Materials Science and Technology, he has played a key role in educating generations of engineers and researchers who now work in industry and academia. His work embodies the ideal of a “teacher-scientist” – a professional who successfully combines cutting-edge research with high-quality teaching and inspires those around him.

Professor Příhoda also played a crucial role in establishing and further developing the Department of Thermal Engineering, which has become a respected academic workplace. He contributed to expanding the field toward emerging challenges, including material recycling, processing of metallurgical waste, and environmentally oriented technologies.

Fifty years of continuous service at a single university is an exceptional achievement, reflecting dedication, consistency, and commitment to the core mission of higher education – teaching, research, and knowledge transfer. The Georgius Agricola Medal thus represents not only a symbolic expression of gratitude but also deep respect for a personality who has significantly shaped technical education and research at VSB–TUO.

The ceremonial presentation of the medal served as a dignified reminder of the values upon which the university is built – expertise, perseverance, and the transmission of knowledge to future generations. Professor Příhoda now joins the ranks of distinguished individuals whose work has left a lasting mark not only on academia but also on industrial practice.
